The common types of Vitamin A (VA) are retinyl palmitate and beta-carotene. The main form of retinyl palmitate VA is from animal origin and the main form of beta-carotene VA is from plant origin. Vitamin A is in most multiple vitamin formulas. Always investigate not only the type of Vitamin A but the amount. Some research shows that high doses of retinyl palmitate can have harmful, however the beta-carotene form does not appear to cause any harm even in high doses. If you are VA deficient it can cause vision issues, skin issues, growth issues (in children), and lower immune responses. Side effects are rare at usual doses in VA supplements so if you take a multiple vitamin and an additional VA supplement make sure you do not overdose on VA particularly if your form of VA is retinyl palmitate.
